Thesis title: The hetero poly-and oligosaccharides extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica and Opuntia joconostle cladodes: molecular dimensions, chemical characterization, and potential use as a pharmaceutical prebiotic supplement.

Short description: My aim is to find the composition, structure and molecular dimensions (size and branching characteristics) of diverse heteropolysaccharides and how the unique characteristics of these poly and oligosaccharides relate to their fermentability by diverse probiotics. The main focus is on the saccharides extracted from the cladodes of two cactus: Opuntia ficus-indica and Opuntia joconostle, and in collaboration with other research groups, oligosaccharides such as fructo- and xylooligosaccharides, and flax heteropolysaccharides.
