Andreas Wasilewicz: Fighting corona with natural substances

Impact.Award 2022 winner Andreas Wasilewicz focuses in his research on the discovery of natural substances against acute respiratory diseases such as COVID-19. At the beginning of his research that is part part of an FWF project, Andreas tested various plant and fungal extracts for their antiviral effect against SARS-CoV-2 in a cell model. The project team then continued to investigate the natural substances contained in the most promising extracts. Using state-of-the-art techniques applied in research into natural products, Wasilewicz and the project team identified the natural substances responsible for the antiviral effect. The researchers subsequently targeted these natural substances to isolate them and examined their antiviral effect against SARS-CoV-2. The natural substances identified by the researchers could be used in future to develop antiviral medicinal substances.
