Thesis title: Preparation, characterization and modification of gemcitabine containing polymeric drug delivery systems

Thesis Outline: The stability of gemcitabine during intravesical therapy of urothelial cancer can be increased by conjugating a fatty acid to the amino group and encapsulation in a PLGA particle matrix. The encapsulation efficiency as well as the release of gemcitabine-amide from PLGA particles can be controlled by the length of the fatty acid conjugated to the amino moiety. A further functionalisation of the particle surface can lead to an improved biorecognitive interaction with urothelial cells.
