Research

Phytochemistry & Biodiscovery

We focus on unravelling nature’s complexity to seek for novel drug leads from nature by using integrated chemoinformatic and chemometric approaches. We aim at discovering bioactive compounds from medicinal plants of ethnopharmacological sources (Dioscorides’ de material medica, Chinese herbal medicine) by means of in silico techniques (molecular modelling, virtual screening) and phenotypic screenings using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Our research on bioactive metabolites from diverse natural sources puts special emphasis on natural leads against inflammatory processes, metabolic syndrome, and viral infections/influenza and potential cardiotoxic compounds in commonly consumed botanicals. Moreover, we are also interested in method refinement for analytics and quality control.
