Join the VDS of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences


We want to attract highly qualified MSc graduates in Pharmaceutical, Nutritional or Sport Sciences, Chemistry, (Molecular) Biology or related fields.

Basically, announcement of open positions and entry into the doc school are possible at any time. 

In case you bring your own funding or a potentail fellowship holder and want to be accepted to PhD studies and to become a VDS PhaNuSpo member, please directly contact a potential supervisor of choice in order to discuss your proposed doctoral thesis topic and required procedure.

All PhD candidates have to complete the mandatory coursework and milestones of the PhD programme.

At the University of Vienna, there are three broad categories of doctoral students in the fields of pharmceutical sciences, nutritional sciences and sport science.


Funded PhDs

Funded PhD students obtain a university funded or third-party financed position (University Assistant "prae doc") at the University of Vienna under the supervision of a PhaNuSpo PI member. The PhD candidates are expected to participate in PhaNuSpo activities and pass the public presentation of his/her thesis research project within the first year after admission. As PhaNuSpo members they benefit from doc school activities, events and funding schemes.

  2. Application for admission to the PhD programme in the fields of Pharmacy or Nutritional Sciences or Sport Science
  3. Consent to the Code of Good Practice for Doctoral School

Self-funded PhDs/ Fellowship holders

PhDs in the doctoral fields of Pharmacy, Nutritional Sciences or Sport Science can apply to become a PhaNuSpo member. Those PhD candidates are expected to pass the public presentation of their thesis project within the first year, participate in PhaNuSpo funded activities and events, and are eligible to apply to PhaNuSpo funding schemes, and benefit from the supervisory structure of PhaNuSpo.

Required steps

  1. Application for admission to the PhD programme in the fields of Pharmacy or Nutritional Sciences or Sport Science
  2. Having a supervisor/ PI being PhaNuSpo member
  3. Consent to the Code of Good Practice for Doctoral Schools

Independent PhDs

It is possible to pursue a PhD degree in Life Sciences/ Sport Science at the University of Vienna without joining VDS PhaNuSpo or any other doctoral school of the University of Vienna.

However, please note that many offers and services provided for PhD candidates are solely restricted to PhaNuSpo members.
