Upon approval of the PhD thesis topic after the public presentation, a doctoral thesis agreement has to be signed.

The student together with the supervisor will set up his/her Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC), consisting of his/her supervisor and at least one co-mentor encompassing the relevant discipline(s) of the thesis topic. The TAC shall discuss the study plan with the student and shall ensure that he/she will obtain sufficient training in all the required research areas. The PhD students will participate in the work progress seminars and the TAC shall meet with the student once a year. Feedback will be provided by the TAC and will be summarized in written form and annexed to the Annual Progress Report of the doctoral thesis project.

The Doctoral Thesis Agreement comprises the following points:

  • all participants' rights and obligations
  • detailed description of the doctoral thesis project
  • time schedule and specification of financial aspects
  • extent of supervision (frequency of feedback meetings)
  • requirements that have to be fulfilled

Besides writing the dissertation, the PhD student must complete coursework (e.g. through seminars, lectures, etc.), totaling 20 ECTS (pharmacy and nutrition) or between 18 and 30 ECTS (sports science). The student is also encouraged to participate in courses teaching transferable skills as well as obtaining other scientific qualifications (e.g. through presentations at conferences). Courses on transferable skills and further funding opportunities are listed at the Center for Doctoral Studies of the University of Vienna. Furthermore the Doctoral School of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sports Sciences provides a part of the travel expenses for active participation in scientific conferences. Courses should be chosen to best fit the doctoral student's research project and intended career path.
