Our PhD student Laura Bragagna (Nutritional Sciences) attended the 52nd European Environmental Mutagenesis And Genomics Society Meeting (EEMGS) and the 15th International Comet Assay Workshop in Rovinj, Croatia.

Thanks to the Doctoral School of Pharmaceutical, Nutritional and Sports Sciences (VDS PhaNuSpo), I was able to attend the 52nd European Environmental Mutagenesis And Genomics Society Meeting (EEMGS) and the 15th International Comet Assay Workshop in Rovinj, Croatia.

I also had the opportunity to present my own research in a poster session. My poster was about a human study that was carried out in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Martin Clodi from the Hospital St. John of God and the JKU in Linz. In this study, we were able to examine the blood and plasma of healthy men who had been administered intravenous glucose either continuously or as a repeated bolus in a crossover study design and were observed over a period of 48 hours. The human samples were analysed in our laboratories at the University of Vienna for various markers of oxidative stress and DNA damage using the comet assay.

There were also many interesting presentations with lively discussions on toxicology, mutagenesis and molecular damage. My personal highlight was the International Comet Assay Workshop, as I have been working a lot with the comet assay method since the beginning of my PhD studies. It is very helpful and important to be at the cutting edge of the technology and to meet many other scientists who are also working with this method. I am very grateful for this valuable experience, especially to my supervisor Prof. Karl-Heinz Wagner, who is keen to ensure that we broaden our horizons and stay at the forefront of science.
