The European Molecular Imaging Meeting (EMIM) is a major annual platform organised by the European Society for Molecular Imaging (ESMI). ESMI is a scientific committee representing the academic community working with multidisciplinary molecular imaging techniques. Cell motility and migration play a crucial role in healthy tissues and disease models such as wound healing, cancer progression and metastatic cancer cells. Based on a 3D methodology established by our group, we have developed a multi-modal live-imaging method to evaluate cell migration and anti-metastatic drug candidates. Since imaging technologies are a very important step in the preclinical and clinical stages, my PhD project is centered on improving this multi-modal live-imaging method and evaluating drug candidates in this 3D device.
At this conference, where new and advanced imaging techniques are mostly presented, I learned about several fluorescence imaging devices. In the "Cellular Imaging Techniques" workshop I had the opportunity to listen to talks given by Kurt I. Anderson, the head of the Francis Crick Institute of Light Microscopy. He is a brilliant cell biologist. His lab focuses on advanced imaging techniques to study cell migration. In particular, this talk improved my perspective on my PhD project.
In addition to the training, I had the opportunity to meet with other PIs, postdocs, and PhD students working in this field. I have enhanced my academic environment and gained new perspectives.
It was exhilarating and fascinating for me to present my work at an international congress for the first time. Although I was excited and nervous at the beginning, I learned to manage to control myself during the poster presentation and became more comfortable answering questions from the audience. During the congress, I learned new techniques and I'm looking forward to employ to use these new approaches to my thesis. As a consequence of the various conversations and feedback I have received, I am looking forward to using multiple sets of experiments in my thesis to seek answers to new questions.
