I recently had the privilege of embarking on a research stay at the Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Western Australia, which was an incredibly enriching experience. I am truly grateful for the PhaNuSpo International Mobility Grant, which made my research visit between 28.07–18.08.2023 possible. Dr. Catherine Bondonno and Prof. Jonathan Hodgson at the ECU are cooperation partners of the ongoing FWF-funded project (PI: Dr. Oliver Neubauer) in which my dissertation is being conducted.

I got insights into the academic environment at the ECU, learned from experts in my field and gained fresh insights into my research area. I carried out different research activities, including contributing to the ongoing clinical trial, getting insights into the analysis of blood (and saliva) biomarkers and epidemiological methods. These biomarkers (NO2-/NO3-, F2-isoprostanes) have been assessed at ECU in the scope of the FWF-funded project and it was interesting to observe the methodology and tools for the measurement. During my stay I had access to excellent resources that significantly boosted the quality and depth of my research. Beyond the academic sphere, my stay at ECU broadened my horizons on a personal level too. The knowledge gained, the valuable discussions on my research and the opportunities are invaluable takeaways that will continue to shape my academic and personal growth. I am grateful for the possibility to be a part of the ECU community and look forward to the exciting research endeavours that lie ahead.
