Group sessions: Time-Management and Wellbeing

Feeling tired, isolated and stressed? Problems with your supervisor? Working 24/7 but not getting much done? Feeling stuck? Feeling guilty about taking a day off? These are all common experiences in the early stages of a research career. While life as a doctoral candidate is challenging, it can be made easier with group coaching. Academic work is a creative process that requires self-motivation and may also be often a solitary activity that requires a lot of discipline and perseverance. This can make you feel insecure and demotivated. Group coaching is an opportunity to achieve the goal of a successful career with a focus on your personal wellbeing.

These group sessions take place in company of other PhD students form our Doc School, who often face the same challanges during their studies. It can be helpful to see that you are not alone. The coach, Dr. Markus Böckle, holds a PhD and is also a lecturer, so he knows how academia works and the problems that often arise.

  • For whom? The offer is open to all doctoral students who are part of PhaNuSpo, regardless of whether you have a work contract with the university or not.
  • Group size: Ideally around 10.
  • How does it work? Simply email Mr. Markus Böckle at office@praxis-boeckle.at before each meeting (in the email you can tell Markus details of what you would like to discuss) or register online at https://calendly.com/markus-boeckle/group-coaching-phanuspo.
  • How often can I participate? As often as you like.
  • Location: Magdalenenstraße 21/7, 1060 Vienna

Talk: Self-Management & Wellbeing for Early Career Researchers

© M. Boeckle

The entrance to the university marks a period of transition for young people. During this transition, students face new challenges, such as making independent decisions about their lives and studies, adjusting to the academic demands of a challenging learning environment, and interacting with a diverse range of new people. In addition, many students leave their homes, sometimes for the first time, and move away from their support network.

These challenges can affect the mental health and wellbeing of early career researchers. Indeed, there is evidence that a strain on mental health is placed on students once they start university. Although this decreases over the course of their studies (Macaskill, 2013, Mey and Yind, 2015), it does not return to pre-university levels.

The VDS PhaNuSpo invited Dr. Markus Boeckle to give us an overview of the current research on mental health and wellbeing in science and possible ways to approach and implement support services.
