The annual report has to be submitted annually after approval of the doctoral thesis agreement and to be approved by the study programme leader. These reports constitute attachments (annexes) to the doctoral thesis agreement. They must be evaluated by the supervisor(s), signed by the student and the supervisor(s) before being submitted. After submission, the study programme leader will approve the report or may request further information for approval.

The annual report serves two main purposes

  • Taking stock of the progress of the doctoral studies made during every year and is supporting both the doctoral candidates and supervisors to keep track of the research project and to avoid pitfalls that could have been avoided in retrospect (e.g. unrealistic timetable, false expectations).
  • Documenting changes that become necessary or even desirable which could not have been anticipated when the doctoral thesis agreement has been signed. For instance, initially intended data collection becomes impossible because individuals rewoked or access to or databases got denied; or new unexpected opportunities and chances turned up, such as a new conference. Those changes to the doctoral thesis agreement need to be documented in those annual reports.
