Thesis title: The role of TLR9 in liver decline and immune modulation in ageing and overweight.
Thesis outline: Ageing and obesity exacerbate systemic inflammation, increasing the risk of liver dysfunction and age-related diseases. Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) plays a central role in liver degeneration, as it can be activated by mitochondrial DNA released during metabolic stress, and amplifying inflammation.
In my PhD project, I explore the role of TLR9 in liver decline and immune modulation in ageing and overweight individuals (BMI 25-30). Using animal models, I investigate whether TLR9 inhibition reduces inflammation and liver degeneration. Additionally, human trials will assess the anti-inflammatory potential of xanthohumol, a plant-derived compound known to modulate TLR signalling, in overweight individuals. With this research, I aim to contribute to a better understanding of inflammation-driven liver ageing.
