Group coaching: Self-Management and Wellbeing

for PhaNuSpo doctoral students

Feeling tired, isolated and stressed? Problems with your supervisor? Working 24/7 but not getting many things done? Feeling stuck? Feeling guilty for taking a day off?

These are all common experiences in the early stages of a research career. While life as a PhD candidate is not easy, it can be made easier with group coaching. Academic work is a creative process that requires a lot of self-motivation and is rather often a solitary activity that requires a lot of discipline and perseverance. This can make you feel insecure and demotivated. Group coaching is an opportunity to achieve the goal of a successful career with a focus on your personal wellbeing.

  • Target Group: For doctoral students, who are PhaNuSpo members, in any phase of their project who would like to monitor their progress within a group of fellows, supervised by a trained coach.

Talk: Self-Management & Wellbeing for Early Career Researchers

© M. Boeckle

The entrance to the university marks a period of transition for young people. During this transition, students face new challenges, such as making independent decisions about their lives and studies, adjusting to the academic demands of a challenging learning environment, and interacting with a diverse range of new people. In addition, many students leave their homes, sometimes for the first time, and move away from their support network.

These challenges can affect the mental health and wellbeing of early career researchers. Indeed, there is evidence that a strain on mental health is placed on students once they start university. Although this decreases over the course of their studies (Macaskill, 2013, Mey and Yind, 2015), it does not return to pre-university levels.

The VDS PhaNuSpo invited Dr. Markus Boeckle to give us an overview of the current research on mental health and wellbeing in science and possible ways to approach and implement support services.
