Thesis title: "Gender roles and gender-specific images of movement and the body in the workers' sports movement from 1945 to 1971" [German: Genderspezifische Bewegungs- und Körperdarstellungen in der Arbeiterinnensportbewegung von 1945-1971 ]

Thesis outline: The (media) representation of female athletes is a topic that has been widely studied and discussed until today. The aim of the dissertation project is a social and cultural historical analysis of gender roles and gender-specific representations of movement and the body in the workers' sports movement of the 20th century. The archival holdings of the Verein für Geschichte in der ArbeiterInnensportbewegung form the central source base. The focus is not only on text, but also on the numerous pictorial documents. The gender theme is of particular interest because emancipatory motives to include women workers in the sports movement emerged particularly early on in the workers' sports movement.
